DisplaySearch is predicting that Apple will revamp nearly all of the displays in its products over the next year.
According to a recent blog post, DisplaySearch believes Apple has fallen behind in display technology despite it having been a leader in the past. To address this, they believe the company will revamp numerous products with new displays.
In reality, changing to a bigger display or a higher resolution is not as simple as changing the screen. The graphic processing unit (GPU) and operating system match the display hardware. A device with high resolution screen but without high-resolution GPU and OS capabilities is like a soldier driving a powerful tank but using a sword to fight. What Apple does better than any company is integrate the hardware and software, as well as the implementation of the user interface, and finally the content ecosystem.
The iPhone is predicted to move from a 4-inch 1136x640 display to a 4.7-inch 1280x720 display and a 5.7-inch 1920x0180 display.
The iPad is said to keep its 9.7-inch 2048x1536 display but get a slimmer bezel this year. Apple will reportedly add a new 12.9-inch 2732x2048 model in 2014.
The iPad mini will go from a 7.9-inch 1024x768 display to a 7.9-inch 2048x1536 display in Q4 2013.
Also, Apple will reportedly launch a new 12-inch 2304x1440 MacBook Air in 2014.
Finally, DisplaySearch also predicts we will see the rumored Apple Television and iWatch in Q3 and Q4 2014, respectively. The Apple TV is said to come in 55-inch and 65-inch 4Kx2K displays. The iWatch will reportedly sport a 1.3"/1.63" 320x320 flexible AMOLED display.
