Apple will unveil a new 'Smart Home' software platform at its Worldwide Developer Conference next week, reports the Financial Times.
Apple plans to take on rivals Google and Samsung and make a “big play” in the world of smart home technology at its Worldwide Developer Conference on June 2 in San Francisco, according to people familiar with the matter.
The platform would turn the iPhone into a remote control for lights, security systems, and other household appliances. The system will let users easily set up and control new 'smart home' devices. For example, your iPhone could signal that you've arrived home, automatically turning on the lights.
Apple has reportedly been talking to a select group of smart device manufacturers whose products will be certified to work with the new system. The idea is similar to Apple's 'Made for iPhone' program but will apparently have a new brand name and logo.
The smart devices and software platform will be featured in Apple's retail stores. The company already sells many smart home products such as the Nest thermostat, Dropcam camera, Philips Hue lightbulbs, Belkin WeMo light switches, and more.
Apple is holding its WWDC 2014 keynote on June 2nd at 10AM.
