New Report Says iPhone Won’t Get An OLED Display Anytime Soon
Wednesday, 25 November 2015
Apple will reportedly transition to OLED displays for the iPhone starting in 2018, reports Nikkei.com.
In light of the decision, South Korea's LG Display is already planning capacity upgrades. But securing enough panels for the more than 200 million phones Apples ships globally every year will likely prove difficult. The U.S. company is thus likely to opt for offering OLED iPhones alongside those using LCD screens.
The site notes that there are technical challenges with switching to OLED. The panels tend to degrade over time and Apple will have to work over the next year or so to eliminate those issues.
To prepare for the shift, LG is reportedly planning a large expansion of its OLED production line at its main plant in the northwestern city of Paju. The expansion is expected to cost several hundred billion yen. The company is also investing 1.05 trillion won ($927 million) in a smaller production line in the southern city of Gumi.
