New Next Generation iPhone Concept

Another next generation iPhone concept which incorporates the new black bezel has posted online.

Unlike the previous mock up this one pictures an iMac like bottom to the device. The black bezel only covers about 5/6ths of the phone and the earpiece is higher and wider just as depicted in the rumored bezel leak.

Which if any do you think is the most likely?

Photo of Matte versus Glossy Back iPhone

A photo depicting the rumored black matte iPhone casing next to the current iPhone casing has been posted online online by MacRumors.

The image of a matte back iPhone has been circulating online for some time. Some have suggested that this casing may be similar to the one Apple uses for the next generation iPhone.

SBSettings 3.0 to Get More Features

BigBoss has released SBSettings 2.99 and announced more features for the SBSettings 3.0 release.

In addition to the new features mentioned here, the following additions will be made:

- You can now have more than 12 toggles. (On the 3.0 OS). When you have > 12 toggles it will let you scroll like categories app or such.
- There is now an option to put the free memory in the statusbar. See:

- You can now select from several options to customize the behaviors of SBSettings:
--Enable or disable the U/I from lock screen
--Enable or disable the U/I during calls (for those of you that kept having the U/I activate on your cheek).
--Enable or disable the date in status bar.
--Enable or disable the memory free in status bar.
--Enable or disable numeric battery, wifi, or GSM (phone strength).
--Revamped the U/I on the more - extras screen.

Internally, I have made the toggles SDK more extensible enabling direct access to system() calls within the toggles. I expect another small flood of new toggles like safari download, samba, or syslog toggles. These tasks were impossibly difficult on 1.x sbsettings and are now trivially simple.

You can download and install SBSettings from the BigBoss Cydia repository.

Google Latitude on the iPhone

Google today demonstrated its Latitude location-based service running on the iPhone, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Google Latitude is a service which allows you to see where your friends are and what they are up to then quickly contact them with SMS, IM, or a phone call. The service is already available for Android phones; however, Google is waiting for the iPhone 3.0 OS before launching on the iPhone.

Google has been waiting for the 3.0 software is because it’s not actually creating a native iPhone app for Latitude — as all other location-based services on the iPhone are — instead it’s using the Safari web browser to run Latitude. Thanks to HTML 5, Safari will be able to access a user’s location information and Latitude will be able to access that as well (provided the user gives permission). This will put it on par with what Google is doing in its browser for Android.

A web app doesn't seem like the best solution for Google Latitude on the iPhone but we will have to wait and see what happens.

Apple to Cut 8GB iPhone Price to $99?

A research note from RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky suggests that Apple may drop the price of the 8GB iPhone to $99(with contract), according to a Barrons report.

In a research note this morning, he notes that the company is widely expected to unveil updated iPhones at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. Expectations are they will keep price points at $199 and $299, with 16 GB and 32 GB models. Abramsky thinks even an evolutionary upgrade will drive a healthy upgrade cycle; he estimates 20% of the 21 million iPhone installed base will upgrade within the first year.

But he also says that the company could leverage its component and manufacturing efficiencies by offering an 8 GB version of the phone at $99, down from $199 currently. He thinks the result could provide a major lift to unit demand, with 5 million additional iPhones in FY 2009, and 22 million in FY 2010.

'New York Nights: Success in the City' First Impressions

057567_5jpg

Gameloft's latest title, New York Nights: Success in the City [App Store] popped up for sale this evening. As a social simulation game, you play the role of your customized character, fresh off a plane in Manhattan with little more than the clothes you're wearing and an entire city in front of you.

New York is split in to six areas: 5th Avenue, Greenwich, Wall Street, Times Square, Chinatown and Central Park. Each section of the city has its own set of NPC's to talk to and different businesses to explore as you make your way to the top of the nightlife scene

The game starts with a fairly detailed tutorial in which you meet your brother at your new apartment, make friends with someone on the street (who oddly enough quickly becomes your new roommate), work your first job as a dancer at the nearby Club Awesome. New York Nights: Success in the City plays similar to The Sims, only instead of focusing around your house, emphasis is placed on people, activities, and relationships. A focus that I'm enjoying as the decorating/building aspect of The Sims never interested me that much.

3574034525_5ce5222a14_o

The graphics are colorful, the adventures I've had so far have been fairly amusing, and the game as a whole seems to have a good sense of humor. Originally existing on mobile phones, New York Nights: Success in the City is a decent port. The touchscreen interface works well, although it would be nice if there were confirmations on conversation choices since there is nothing you can do but face the consequences of talking about "Car accidents" instead of "Club chicks".

3574034073_ed7ac972cc_o

As you work your way through the game, you balance a wide variety of stats. For instance, throughout the day you get tired, increasing "Sleep". Drinking coffee to stay up later decreases your "Sleep", but in turn increases your "Crazy" and "Bathroom" statistics.

New York Nights: Success in the City was well recieved in its original mobile phone release, and having enjoyed what I've seen so far in the game, I expect the iPhone port to see the same praise.

Don Bluth's classic arcade game Space Ace has just landed in the App Store for a price of $4.99 [link]. The launch is sure to excite fans of the original arcade game which was released back in 1984.

Space Ace was the follow up title to the popular Dragon's Lair laserdisc game which shared the same style of gameplay.

Meanwhile, Big Albie had a better experience with the controls. The game comes with 3 modes of difficulty: Cadet, Captain and Ace. Cadet offers the additional help of flashing the button you need to press while in the other modes you must rely on the environmental clues. This video shows a brief amount of gameplay from the first couple of scenes in both Cadet and Captain modes:

New iPhone to Come in Six Different Versions?

A new report by iLounge suggests that the next generation iPhone will come in six different versions.

The site has been told that there will be two storage capacities each for: 3G, enhanced 3G ("3.5G/3.75G"), and mainland China versions of the phone.

The phones will have the same size and general design of the current model, but with a less scratchable matte plastic body.

They believe that the telecoms in each country will only receive the version which matches their system capabilities so the option between a “slow iPhone” and “fast iPhone” won't be available.

X2 Football 2009' to Deliver Another Sports Title for the iPhone

img_1035

Football (U.S. Soccer) fans should be pleased to hear that mobile developer Exient is bringing their sport gaming expertise to the iPhone with X2 Football 2009. Exient has been responsible for a number of high profile DS titles including FIFA 09, Madden NFL 09, and PSP/PS2 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.

Exient sent us this gallery of screenshots (embedded below) while Pocket Gamer managed to get some hands on time with the upcoming title.

The most notable thing when you first pick up the game is the controls, which consist of an onscreen analogue joypad for movement and passing, and three buttons: pass, shoot and through ball. Helping you understand what you're doing is an arrow that shows where you're going to pass the ball, or where your player is going to run to.

Responding to the analog nature of the touch screen's controls, Exient has adjusted the game design to accommodate it with player animations to reflect the non-digital controls.

In balancing the cost of licensing, Exient has chosen not to take on that additional cost for this first release. Realistically, they are looking to build up their reputation on the iPhone side before pursing these expensive deals.

The game is awaiting approval and should appear soon. No pricing has been announced.

A Video Roundup of 8 Upcoming iPhone and iPod Touch Games

primary_rtmi

We've received a number of interesting new video previews for upcoming iPhone games. Many of the videos are new previews for games we've covered before, while a few are from games we've never talked about. All the videos are worth a look, so check them out.

Games We've Discussed

  • Star Defense - Ngmoco's long anticipated 3D Tower Defense game appears to be getting closer to release. A new hands on video from Ngmoco shows more of the game's controls.
  • Return to Mysterious Island - Inspired by the Jules Verne novel, this 3d adventure game offers over 15 hours of gameplay. TetraEdge Games and Chillingo have released this new trailer video showing off more of the game and controls.
  • Blimp - The Flying Adventures - Craneball Studios has released an actual "hands on" gameplay video of their upcoming Blimp game which we previewed in April. The video should address questions and concerns about the control system the game uses.
  • Circuit Strike One - One we've been keeping an eye on since January, Circuit Strike One also appears to be near release. Chillingo has released a number of new gameplay videos today: Video 1, Video 2, Video 3
  • Monster Pinball - A stylistic pinball game with 6 interconnected tables. The graphics and animations were poorly captured in the previous gameplay video, so the developers released a much higher quality gameplay video recorded off the computer.

Chillingo's 'Graviton' Lands in the App Store

Back in March we previewed Virtway's upcoming Graviton, an iPhone gravity game in the vein of classic Thrust. The game has just arrived in the App Store [link], published by Chillingo.

After devastating the largest cities of Earth and extracting all of its natural resources, the Xugg'zak left behind a planet buried in debris.

As the pilot of the Graviton ship, your mission is to salvage the scarce energy spheres that the Xugg'zak have left behind, and take them to a safe place where will be processed to rebuild what's left from the human race.

In Graviton, the player is given tilt-based control of a ship equipped with a magnetic grappling hook. The mission is to pick up a metal orb with the hook and carry it through a series of five different post-apocalyptic environments filled with a variety of obstacles, some of which are interactive (drop the orb into a moving cart, charge the orb to unlock doors, etc).

Graviton screen

The game features "2.5D" graphics and a realistic physics model that delivers gravity, inertia, and momentum, adding to the challenge of completing the objective. In-game tutorials explain the action, three levels of difficulty help tune the game to the player's particular skill level, and on-line leaderboards add to the competitive value of the game.

I've played through several of the game's environments and find it to be a worthy take on the Thrust formula, with particularly clever obstacles. My only real complaint with the game is to do with its hovering mechanic. While most gravity games require constant triggering of downward thrust to remain aloft (which can be very challenging in close quarters), Graviton's ship will remain safely pinned in mid-air if the device is held at the proper angle. It's a control mechanic that I find a bit too forgiving for my taste, but isn't reason enough for me to recommend that gravity fans pass on this challenging title.

See Virtway's trailer video.

Chillingo indicates that if the game sells well, additional levels will be provided in a free update to owners.

BigBoss to Release SBSettings 3.0 Soon

BigBoss has announced that he will release SBSettings 3.0 soon since most functions will work for those on the 2.x firmware as well.

Below you can find a changelog for the improvements made...

3.0 Changelog
- DYLIB: Modified for all the changes required to work on 3.0 (with proper patched jailbreak, not working with public jailbreak on 3.0).
- DYLIB: Added status bar date. This will put the date in your statusbar right by your clock. This defaults off and you must enable it in the more app. See screenshot of statusbar with this enabled:

- DYLIB: Massively reworked SSH and EDGE toggles. Solved the low memory freeze ups previously seen when hitting refresh or trying to toggle EDGE or SSH. This was a major issue on current versions of SBSettings. It seems totally solved.
- DYLIB: Massively reworked WiFi
toggle since it didn’t work on 3.0. It toggles very quickly now.
- DYLIB: Massively reworked phone toggle (airplane) since it didnt work on 3.0. Phone toggle is also instant.
- DYLIB: Added a single tap status bar to close the SBSettings window in 3.0 only. This is because home button brings up the search and there was some interference (enough that I felt annoyed). So you can swipe to open the window, tap to close.
- Both: Added ability to move toggle order around.
- More app: Added mobile substrate extensions manager. You can now troubleshoot a poorly performing device by disabling and enabling various installed mobile substrate extensions. (Requires respring after toggling).
- More app: Added numeric wifi, numeric GMS (phone) to extras menu. (Note: the 3.0 version of numeric battery looks different. Remember this is just enabled by SBSettings. It’s a feature of springboard).
- More app: Added statusbar date toggle button in extras menu to enable or disable statusbar date.
- Revved version to 3.0 since this version works with iPhone OS 3.0. It should work with 2.0-3.0.
- Reworked how root requiring toggles work. As such, we can now system out to processes as root. This enables Safari download and other toggles! (Expect them soon).
