Spore Coming to Mac, iPhone on Sunday

Apple News

Electronic Arts will release Spore for Mac and Spore Origins for iPhone on Sunday, September 7th.

Spore is an electronic game which allows a player to control the evolution of a species from its beginnings as a unicellular organism, through development as an intelligent and social creature, to interstellar exploration as a spacefaring culture.

Currently Spore Origins for iPhone is confined to the cellular phase, set in an ancient tidepool. The objective is staying on top of the food chain, surviving 35 levels of play.

EA Producer Mike Pagano tells MacNN his team spent months working with iPhone SDK, and was "surprised at its capabilities." Pagano says EA developers discovered the iPhone SDK could do "a ton of stuff" they had not expected. Programmers were able to use the iPhone's hardware acceleration to create levels of parallax, image meshes and 3D graphics that were previously unavailable on mobile devices.

Unforunately, iPhone users will not be able download creatures or play online; however, you can import textures or images. Snapshots can be emailed or exported to sites like MySpace.

Spore Origins for iPhone is expected to cost $9.99.
